-- Dominion PX saves energy and traces unused power capacity --
CAPELLE AAN DEN IJSSEL, THE NETHERLANDS, 7 April 2008 - Raritan is introducing an intelligent Power Distribution Unit (PDU), the Dominion® PX, to tackle the growing number of power issues in data centres. This new PDU enables businesses to easily determine the power consumption and capacity in their data centres, to monitor rack temperature and humidity, and power sequence, and to remote-control their IT equipment.
The Dominion PX is based on the premise that you cannot manage it if you cannot measure it first. The intelligent PDU offers real-time, detailed information on the energy consumption of individual outlets - where other solutions typically provide only an aggregate view of energy consumption by the PDU as a whole. Optional temperature and humidity sensors provide real-time environmental information.
The PDU enables facility managers and IT administrators to trace and analyse unutilised capacity and to save costs by using it elsewhere. Research has shown that many data centres have hidden capacity which can be tapped into by determining the draw of separate IT equipment items. In many cases the effective draw amounts to around half the watt use or the amperage stated on the product's nameplate.
The Dominion PX also offers safe remote control. Using serial and/or IP access authorised administrators can access remote outlets at diverse sites to reboot servers and network equipment, individually or collectively, and avoid the need for truck rolls (sending out mechanics). They can also use the PDU as a productivity tool to define the energy-management strategy for each server (group) or create, with the aid of power strips, a virtual outlet to manage servers which support specific applications.
The PX is setting a new standard for safety. It is the first PDU to offer 256-bit AES encryption at hardware level. In addition, it features password support, access control at outlet level, Access Control Lists per outlet, access control at group level and a built-in firewall. The PDU not only works safely in stand-alone mode, it can also be combined with external authentication and authorisation services.
Edwin de Boer, Director of Marketing Europe: "Optimising the energy consumption is becoming increasingly important for data centre and facility managers. If businesses can monitor, analyse and manage their energy consumption at outlet level, they will get detailed insight into the energy consumption of their data centres. They can also identify problems before they cause disruptions, make well-founded decisions on their rack capacity and take a significant stride towards ‘green computing'. Our Dominion PX can help lower the operating costs of data centres and improve the bottom line."
AvailabilityThe Dominion PX PDU is currently available in Europe in fifteen standard models with between eight and twenty outlets. We also supply customised models to ensure that our customers are optimally served. The PDU works independently without additional hardware or software. Optional temperature and humidity sensors are available.
The Dominion PX PDU can be used as a stand-alone power management solution or integrated with Raritan's Paragon II or Dominion Series access-and-control products and with CommandCenter® Secure Gateway for the integrated management of multiple Dominion PXs. The PDU uses circuit breakers instead of fuses for safer, simpler and cheaper maintenance. The Dominion PX comes in three designs: Zero U, 1U and 2U.
